Roof-Nesting Gull Control That Keeps Gulls Off For Good
Apex Pest Control Ltd controls roof-nesting gulls — mainly the herring gull (Larus argentatus) and lesser black-backed gull — across South and West Yorkshire using gull netting, anti-perch gull spikes and proofing. Every job starts with a free survey from a BPCA Bird Management-qualified technician.
Gulls are Red-listed and strictly protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, so Apex Pest Control Ltd works lawfully, leading with humane physical exclusion rather than harm. The family-run company has its Head Office in Sheffield and serves homeowners, property management and businesses alike.
The aim is simple: keep gulls off the building in the first place, so the noise, mess and dive-bombing never start. Proofing fitted at the right time — ideally before April — stops gulls settling for the breeding season and prevents the problem returning year after year.
Seagull Control Profile
Why Roof-Nesting Gulls Are a Problem
Apex Pest Control Ltd is called out to gull problems on rooftops across Yorkshire’s towns and cities, from Sheffield and Leeds to coastal Scarborough. Herring gulls and lesser black-backed gulls now nest on roofs, chimneys and ledges because they are warm, high and free of predators — and the trouble starts in the breeding season. Apex Pest Control Ltd resolves all of this by keeping gulls off the building in the first place. Gulls dive-bomb because they are defending chicks, and because every gull, nest and egg is protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, the lawful answer is preventive proofing — netting, spikes, wires and chimney guards — fitted before the nesting season, not nest removal on demand.
Guano, mess & health risk
Gulls foul roofs and pavements with acidic guano that carries Salmonella and other bacteria, creating slip hazards, corrosion and a serious mess that has to be cleared as a biohazard.
Blocked gutters & noise
Bulky nest debris blocks gutters and drains, while gulls call loudly from first light through the breeding season — a persistent nuisance for homes, hotels and offices alike.
Dive-bombing during nesting
During nesting, parent gulls will dive-bomb people and pets to defend their young. It is intimidating for customers, staff and residents, and a genuine safety concern around busy entrances.
Signs of a Gull Problem and Where They Nest
Apex Pest Control Ltd looks for the tell-tale signs during every survey. Because gulls return to the same site each year, the team proofs every nest and roost point it finds — not just the obvious one.
Nests on flat roofs and chimneys
Large nests appear on flat roofs, behind chimney stacks and in roof valleys. Gulls favour flat and low-pitched roofs, chimney pots, parapets and dormers where they feel safe and undisturbed.
Heavy guano below ledges
Thick streaks of guano below ledges and along gutter lines are a clear marker of a roost or nest above, along with feathers and nest debris collecting in valleys.
Loud calling at dawn
Loud, repeated calling from first light is one of the earliest signs of nesting gulls overhead — a complaint Apex hears often from homes and hotels in town and city centres.
Swooping near the nest
Swooping and dive-bombing close to the roofline usually means a nest with eggs or chicks nearby. The team maps every nest and roost point so nothing is left to re-establish.
The Proofing Methods We Install
Apex Pest Control Ltd specifies the right system for each surface and installs it before the breeding season wherever possible — ideally before April, so gulls cannot settle for the season.
Gull netting
The only solution where gulls are nesting. The team seals courtyards, light wells, flat roofs and undercrofts with tensioned netting that fully excludes gulls from the space — correctly installed and maintained, it lasts for years.
Anti-perch gull spikes
Stainless steel or UV-stabilised polycarbonate spikes for chimney pots, ridges, parapets and ledges. They stop gulls landing without harming them — the everyday workhorse of gull proofing.
Post-and-wire
A discreet, near-invisible spring-tensioned system for ridges and ledges, ideal where the look of the building matters and a low-profile deterrent is needed along the roofline.
Guano clean-up
Apex Pest Control Ltd safely clears and disinfects fouling as a biohazard before any proofing goes up, addressing the health risk, slips and corrosion left behind by roosting gulls.
Every roof is different, so seagull control is survey-led. Apex provides a free survey and a fixed written quote before any work begins.

Apex Pest Control Ltd installs anti-perch spikes and netting on the roofs, chimneys, ridges and gutters where gulls and other birds try to nest and roost.

The Law on Gull Control
Apex Pest Control Ltd controls gulls strictly within the law. All wild birds, their nests and eggs are protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. The herring gull is Red-listed after a population decline of around 60% since the 1980s, and both it and the lesser black-backed gull have been removed from the general licences in England.
That means proofing and deterrents — which Apex Pest Control Ltd leads with — are fully lawful, but any removal of a nest or eggs, or any lethal control, can only be carried out as a last resort under an individual licence from Natural England. Apex Pest Control Ltd advises on this and acts lawfully at every step.
