Statement of Intent

Apex Pest Control Ltd is committed to ensuring, so far as is reasonably practicable, the health, safety, and welfare of all employees, subcontractors, clients, and any other persons who may be affected by our work activities.

We recognise our legal duties under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999, and all other applicable legislation. This policy will be reviewed annually and updated as necessary to reflect changes in legislation, working practices, or business structure.

Responsibilities

Directors

The directors of Apex Pest Control Ltd — Tony Johnson, Donna Johnson, and Tom Johnson — hold overall responsibility for health and safety across all operations. Tony Johnson is the nominated Health & Safety lead responsible for ensuring this policy is implemented, maintained, and reviewed.

Technicians

All technicians are responsible for:

  • Taking reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their work
  • Following all safe working procedures, risk assessments, and instructions provided
  • Using personal protective equipment (PPE) as required
  • Reporting any accidents, near misses, hazards, or unsafe conditions to a director immediately
  • Not undertaking any task for which they have not been trained or do not feel competent to carry out safely

Risk Assessment

Written risk assessments are carried out for all significant work activities, including but not limited to:

  • Application of pesticides and rodenticides
  • Working at height (e.g. roof-level wasp nest treatments, pigeon proofing installations)
  • Lone working
  • Manual handling
  • Driving company vehicles
  • Entry into confined or restricted spaces

Risk assessments are reviewed when working practices change, following any incident, or at least annually.

Working at Height

Where treatments or installations require working at height (such as roof-level wasp nest treatments or bird deterrent installations), a specific working at height risk assessment will be completed prior to the job. Where appropriate, a second technician will attend to assist and act as a ground worker. All work at height is carried out in accordance with the Work at Height Regulations 2005.

Lone Working

Apex Pest Control Ltd technicians regularly work alone on domestic and commercial premises. The following measures are in place to manage lone working risk:

  • Technicians maintain regular contact with the office or a director during the working day
  • Job details including site address and expected duration are logged prior to attendance
  • Technicians are instructed to report any concerns about site safety before entering a property
  • A check-in procedure is in place for technicians attending higher-risk or unfamiliar commercial sites

For larger jobs or work at height, a minimum of two technicians will attend.

Company Vehicles

All technicians operate company vehicles. The following standards apply:

  • All company vehicles are maintained in a roadworthy condition and subject to regular checks
  • Technicians must hold a valid UK driving licence and report any endorsements or convictions to a director immediately
  • Vehicles must not be driven while the driver is fatigued, unwell, or unfit to drive
  • Company vehicles carrying pesticides or chemicals must comply with applicable transport regulations
  • Any vehicle accident or damage must be reported to a director on the same day

Pesticide & Chemical Safety

The safe handling, storage, application, and disposal of pesticides is central to our operations. All pesticide use is governed by our COSHH assessments and carried out in accordance with:

  • Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002 (COSHH)
  • Control of Pesticides Regulations 1986
  • Biocidal Products Regulation (BPR)
  • BPCA codes of practice

Only trained and certificated technicians will apply professional-use pesticides and rodenticides.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

Appropriate PPE is provided to all technicians and must be worn as specified in the relevant risk assessment or COSHH assessment. PPE is inspected regularly and replaced when worn or damaged.

Accidents & Incidents

All accidents, near misses, and dangerous occurrences must be recorded in the company accident book. Where an incident meets the reporting threshold under RIDDOR (Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations 2013), it will be reported to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) without delay.

Emergency Procedures

All technicians are briefed on emergency procedures relevant to their work activities, including actions in the event of accidental pesticide exposure, chemical spillage, or injury on site. Emergency contact numbers are carried by all technicians at all times.

Review

This Health & Safety Policy will be reviewed annually by the directors of Apex Pest Control Ltd, or sooner if significant changes occur in our working practices, staffing, or applicable legislation.
